Important Notice

You only need to follow these migration instructions when you have changed transform settings,
created new sets or added transform servers. If you did not change any of the above you can use
Maltego 2.0.1 out of the box.

Migrating From 2.0 to 2.0.1

Windows Vista

The Import Settings Wizard does not function under the Vista operating system. This is because Vista uses a virtualized ‘Program Files’ directory. In 2.0.1 all settings are stored in user directories – in other words – in upcoming Maltego releases migration will be less painful. For now you will need to follow these instructions.

After downloading and installing version 2.01 do the following:

Step 1: Start version 2.0 – the previous version. Go to Help->About Maltego.. Select the license key and copy it to the clipboard (or write it down somewhere).

Step 2: Using the Vista file manager, open C:\Users\<your username> \AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Maltego. The AppData directory is hidden by default.

Inside this directory you will see three XML files – MaltegoServers.xml (the TAS servers), MaltegoTransforms.xml (your transforms) and transformSets.xml (your sets). These files relate to the 2.0.0 version of Maltego.

Step 3: In another window, open C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\.maltego\v2.0.1:

Select all the XML files in step 2, and copy it into this directory – overriding the files that are already there. This will ensure that your transforms, servers and sets are preserved. Note that the license key file (MaltegoLicense.lic) cannot be used on the new version – you will need to reactive the product as shown in step 4 below.

Step 4: The only thing left to do is to enter the license key (that you copied from the 2.0 install in step 1). This is done by going to Help->Activate product:

Click on Next and enter your license key from step 1:

Click Next and complete the Wizard. When you are done your 2.0.1 copy of Maltego should be working exactly the same as your previous 2.0 installation. At this stage you may choose to uninstall your copy of 2.0.

Windows XP / Linux

You should only need to follow this migration tool if you have installed version 2.0 AND want to keep changes that you might have made to the transforms and/or transform set configuration. If you kept 2.0 on defaults you should not need to migrate anything.

After downloading and installing version 2.01 do the following:

Step 1: Start version 2.0 – the previous version. Go to Help->About Maltego.. Select and license key and copy it to the clipboard (or write it down somewhere).

Step2: Start version 2.01. Version 2.01 has a slightly different icon, a slightly different start page and a slightly different splash page. When 2.01 starts it should pop up the Import Settings Wizard. If it does not or if you want to run this wizard again go to Help->Import settings Wizard:

Select the “Import my configuration from a previously installed instance of Maltego”.

Step 3:Click “Next” and select the directory where you’ve installed Maltego. Because Maltego installs on many different platforms (such as Linux / MacOS) there is no concept of a registry and you need to manually select the directory. The default of this directory should do the trick – as this is the default 2.0 install directory:

Windows: The default installation directory is c:\Program Files\Maltego\

Linux: The default installation directory is ~/Maltego/

The wizard will import TAS servers, Transforms and sets. If the directory does not contain these they will be marked as inactive.

Step 4: Click next and then finish to complete the wizard:

Step 5: The only thing left to do is to enter the license key (that you copied from the 2.0 install in step 1).
